Sooo...I made a lot of mistakes while I was drawing this picture, especialy on her horn. Since I spent over 8 hours with it I decided to upload it. If someone can give me tips on improving, well, I'm all ears :)

All rights rightfully belong to Hasbro and Lauren Faust.

Edit: Okay, seems it was my low self-confidence again :/ Anyway, I was serious about improving. I can't ask my teachers in an IT school about drawing so only the dA community left.

Might I ask how you are able to achieve such striking darks on your works like this? I notice a sharp difference between this and your older pencil works, and I was wondering--did you switch to a different type of pencil? It really makes a big difference for the better, and I would love to know how you do it. :-)

This is super-adorable, by the way. I love the pose, and the expression is perfect. ;-)
Ayzuki Featured By Owner Jul 11, 2012
I think it only looks different because my scanner was configured differently. I'm using the same 2H, HB, 3+4B and sometimes 6B pencils from the beginning.

Wow, I never would have thought the scanner could make that much of a difference. I might have to take a closer look at my own settings now. Thanks! :-)

You do know that when you point out your "mistakes" it makes it easier for us to see the "mistakes"? Don't mention them and maybe we won't see them. When you post it think in your mind that it's a masterpiece that could rival Leonardo, then when someone critiques it act like it's horrible.

Beautifuly executed drawing :), I've browsed through your gallery and may i say it's astounding! ^^, your work has a sort of simplicity about it, you dont add too much to your drawings and that's what makes them unique and good on the eyes : D, If you want Advice, all i'll say is have more self confidence, your work is a lot better than you think it is :)

Keep up the good work! /)

She's so cute! I don't know what needs to be improved, because she looks perfect to me.

You silly girl. What mistakes?? She looks wonderful. Body is anatomically correct (shes sitting and her hind legs look very acurate) Foreleg positioning and drawing look very nice as well. Her eyes.... her eyes are just precious. She looks so cute with that facial expression, almost like shes derping. 9_6 :P As for the horn.. I dont see what mistake you're talking about. Her horn looks like one of the best i've seen so far. Not too long and skinny, not too short and fat. And the point, rounded just perfect. You nailed it!! Overall she looks really good. I like the messy style you did with her mane. Keep up the great work! I see a ton of potential here!!

I think the issue with the horn is twofold:
1) The bangs take up too much space. They take up most of the volume, so the horn gets stuck looking a little flat, because that's the only way it can fit in. For a more realistic interpretation like this, I suggest parting the bangs around her horn a little more.

2) The shading is a bit off. As best I can tell, the light is coming from in front of Twi, but the horn is shaded as though the light is coming from the viewer. I think it could use more shadow on the side facing the back of her head and a bit less on the side facing the same direction as she's looking.

Aside from that, I would recommend giving some thought to getting rid of the part of the head that shows on the left of her left eye (expand the eye a bit to fill the space that will be empty). I used to draw it this way too and after swapping to the way I suggest, I found it looked far more natural.

Otherwise, you have an excellent grasp of anatomy and volume.
Ayzuki Featured By Owner Jan 9, 2012
First of all, thank you for the input, I really appreciate it ( and thanks for the others too ).

1) Well, for me the only problem was that I made the shading way too dark on the horn, it looked better but also it was kinda weird 'cause of the difference. I tried to erase the whole thing but it's not easy to erase 6B pencil and it became a mess. I tried to fix it but i couldn't. Maybe I tried it in the wrong way.

2) I was thinking about the light source issue. I don't follow any kind of "rule" when I make the shading. I do it without thinking about how it should look in reality, without imagining one source around the character. You made me sure that this should be the next step, but it will take a while 'till I get used to it.

Looks perfect to me! :o

The only tip I can offer is the realisation that nearly every artist is there own worst critic (I know I am...). Since the artist is the one person who has to look at there work for hours on end, they and only they are the ones who stare at it long enough to spot the flaws, while the casual viewer doesn't see them at all and instead loves the picture for what it is. Try to look at your work through the prespective of the other viewers who see it fresh for the first time. Maybe then you can start to see the great quality in your work for yourself. That's my tip. :)

Honestly I tried very hard to find any flaws and I got nothin'

I'd love to see this in color though.

Well, if you want to improve, the only thing I can say is that the right arm (or hoof? lol) looks slightly detached) It's not really all that noticable, just something I noticed! Feel free to check out my gallery and help me improve too!
